Weighing
like in Pharaonic times using
A
scale is like a swing for rocking on the play ground: If one child is as
heavy as the other one the scale is balanced.
If
the child sitting on one side of the swing is too heavy it goes down and
the other child goes up.
What
you need
A two-pan-scale
made in Cairo, weights: metal closures of Liquemin
bottles , a German 1-Pfennig coin.
Left: This scale
is NOT exactly balanced. You still have to add one more small weight to
the white toy in the right pan.
Photo 2:
The red toy is a little bid more heavy than the yellow one in this self-made
scale.
Photo 3 and 4: Metal
closures of Liquemin bottles are proper weights for these new Egyptiaqn
two pan scales.
One German Pfennig coin
is on the left pan. The girls add Liquemin weights to the right pan to
balance the scale. If
one closure is a too heavy weight, half or quarter it by scissors.
Right: The scale
of this girl is exactly balanced.
Result:
1 Pfennig is exactly as heavy as ........ metal closures of Liquemin bottles
On
an expensive scale 1 Pfennig coin is 2.0 grams.
