Air
is consumed by a burning candle
Left: The children have
placed three burning candles into three marmelade glasses of different
sizes.
They close the glasses simultaneously
and switch off the light.
Observation
photo
2 und 3: The flame in the left glass starts to get blue from the lower
part of the wick.
Right: The girl points
on the candle that went out first. The candle in the middle was extinguished
next, the right one last.
Explanation:
The candles needed air to burn. The more air a closed glass contains
the longer the candle burns. A blue flame indicates a shortage of air.
As soon as the air is consumed
the candle goes out: First in the smallest glass with the smallest amount
of air, last in the biggest glass.
When
the air is consumed in a closed room (a garage) people cannot longer breath.
You can test the the air in a room by a burning
candle.
