So12 Aquaculture: Plants may grow without soil

You can breed barley seeds to show that they consume air for breathing:
* Place barley corns on wet paper tissue.
* Wait until small roots and shoots are 1 - 2 cm long.
* Fix each plant in a Liquemin vial with water  (use a sheet of aluminium or tissue paper).
* Keep the vials on the window board and replace water by a syringe with a needle.
 
* Photos 2 + 3: Leaves of 20 cm will grow upwards, and the roots will be even longer.
* Left photo: You can see water drops pressed out of the top of the leaves.
