Left:
Red
soil
obtains its colour by red iron compounds.
These soils are very common in Afica, Australia and South America. It is
also present in an area 50 km off Lauterbach near to Lich ("Eiserne Hose").
* Pound red soil, dry and
sieve it. Do the same with other soils (loam, sand).
* Middle: Put a magnet
(from an old loudspeaker) into a plastic pouch, * Move it in the soil.
* Observation
Right:
Black
magnetic particles are collected on the plastic surface.
* By moving the magnet inside
the pouch the black particles are following.
* Explanation:
Many soil samples contain magnetic iron ore.
Magnetic iron ore
can be separated from many soils by strong magnets.
