Micoscale chemistry
experimentation with a high level group of
Augustinerschule Friedberg:
"Alcohols not for
alcoholics"
On 3.11.1999 Dr. El-Marsafy,
a professor of Ain Shams University Cairo/Egypt was a guest of "Leistungskurs"
chemistry of Augustinerschule
Friedberg. He was accompanied by Dr. Peter Schwarz, a former student
of the highschool. The two collegues met each other in Egypt five years
ago when the former citizen of Friedberg worked as an integrated expert
of the Egyptian Ministry of Education.
The Friedberg students attended
a workshop using 5-ml vials to make their own micro burners and to produce
different compounds of ethanol. Black, white and red plastic beads were
welded to make molecule models of alcohols, aldehyde and acetic acid.

Commercial macroscale and self-made microscale
Iodoform reaction
Professor El-Marsafy also
demonstrated a microscale method of esterification. This experiment was
evaluated by molecule models and computer simulations.
