5. Burner 1b: Carbon dioxide, a fire extinguishing gas
In
the
previous experiment you have extinguished
a burning candle in a jar by covering it by a cap. The consumed air contained
carbon dioxide.
Carbon
dioxide from Cola and from an effervescent tablet will be used for fire
extinguishing in the following experiment.
What
you need: 3 infusion bottles 50 mL, Cola fresh and stale,
matches, effervescent tablets, water, balloon, jar with a burning candle.
(effervescent tablets may
be replaced by baking powder and vinegar).
Experiment
with Cola:
a) Transfer fresh
cola into an infusion bottle. Cover it with a stopper
for one minute.
b) Add the same quantity
of stale Cola to a second bottle.
c) Left and
photo
2: Dip a burning match into the bottle with stale Cola and into the
bottle with fresh Cola.
Write
down your observations. Try to explain them.
Experiment
with effervescent tablet
a) Put one tablet
to the third infusion bottle. b) Fill about 15 mL water into a balloon.
c) Close the bottle
with the balloon without adding water to the tablet.
d) Lift the balloon
to mix the water with the tablet now.
e) Photo 3:
Wait one minute. Remove the balloon with gas from the bottle: Close the
balloon tightly during this operation.
g) GLOWLY transfer
