Reaction of ethylene and bromine: Electrophilic addition
* Mix 3 ml of ethanol and 2 ml of conc.
sulfuric acid in a
25 ml vial.
* Heat on an electric hot plate until
bubbles can be seen.
* Close it by a nozzled rubber stopper
to which a
narrow gas delivery tube is attached
with its other
end inserted into the tip of a
50-ml syringe.
* The syringe full of water is placed
in a glas beaker.
* The water in the syringe will be replaced
by ethylene gas which
is washed by the water in
the beaker.

in water is decolourized by the ethylen gas pumped into it from the syringe.
