Dyeing of
cotton fabric in Zimbabwe
In Zimbabwe there are a
lot of people capable of dyeing cotton fabrics very nicely.
Materialials
and Chemicals
Cotton
fabric 80 x 80 cm, Leaves of Flamboayant tree, plastic bucket, dyes (Blue
TB und Yellow 3GT), binder, fixativ, water, brush
Experiment
10
spoons of binder, two spoons of dye, half a spoon of fixativ are mixed
in a plastic bucket. One and a half litre of water is added.
The
fabric is wetted and placed on a plane clean surface.
Left:
Complete leaves and small parts of them are spread on the wet fabric.
Middle:
Blue colour is spread on the fabric using a brush. Right: The same
is done with yellow colour.
Observations:
After
drying in the strong sun, the fabric is dyed where colour had access, leaving
white traces of the leaves.
Where blue and yellow colours
are mixed the resulting colour is green.
