EleE06 Iron
reacts with sulfur in a similar way like with oxygen
Steel
wool reacted with air after heating on the burner leaving a dark brittle
substance called iron oxide.
* Left: Prepare a
piece of gross steel wool to take 2 spatula of sulfur powder.
Carefully heat
it until the sulfur melts and the mixture starts glowing. Remove it from
the fire
* Observatiuon:
The
mixture goes on glowing outside the flame. Right: Adark brittle
substance is left after cooling.
This substance synthesized from iron and sulfur is
called iron sulfide.
Distinguish
between iron oxide
and
iron sulfide:
* Drip hydrochloric acid on
the two samples, compare the smell of the two compounds:
Observatiuon:
A
smell of rotten eggs is observed only with the sample of iron oxide.
Explanations:
The
reactions of iron with O and with S resemble ach other. Both are called
oxidation.
