Experiment
7
The
metal sodium (Na) can be made of molten kitchen salt
* Left: On a fireproof
surface crystals of coarse kitchen salt without additives
(NaCl s) are stronglyh heated by a
micro butangas
torch.
* Photo 2: After
some time the salt is molten and a colourless liquid (NaCl l) can be seen.
(What cannot be done
under these conditions: The positive sodium particles
(Na+) are attracted by the negative
supply
of
electricity resulting in the formation of the metal sodium (Na).
* Photo 3: A tiny
piece of sodium half the size of a match´s head to be used in the
following
experiment.
* Right: The same
piece of sodium metal pressed together by a knife.
