1/100 mol quantities of different
elements (middle) and compounds (right):
..
MolE10 The
Mol,
a manageable quantity of the smallest particles
In the previous experiment
you have learned to calculate how much 1 mol of different substances weighs:
1 mol iodine atoms (I) weighs
126.9 g. So 1 mol iodine (made of molecules I2) weighs 253.8
g,
so 1/100 mol iodine weighs 2.533 g.
1/100 mol water weighs
1/100 x (1 + 1 + 16) g = 0.18 g. This is about 0.2
ml (4 drops).
* Weigh
samples of 1/100 mol of different elements and compounds (6.02x1021smallest
particles).
* Middle: Samples
of the elements (clockwise) C, Mg, Al, S, Fe Cu and (inside) containing
1/100 Mol = 6 x 1021
molecules or units.
* Right: Four drops
of water and the samples of white or coloured compounds contain about 1/100
Mol = 6 x 1021
molecules or units.
