Slaked lime + sand + water--> lime mortar.......................................lime mortar + air --> limestone mortar............gas bubbles by adding of hydrochlorid acid

salt10 Setting of lime mortar a chemical reaction with CO2 of air
Quicklime and slaked lime are very corrosive: Goggles and gloves needed!

For roughcasting a newly built room slaked lime, sand and water are mixed to make a lime mortar.
While this pulp hardens on the wall a chemical reaction of the slaked lime of mortar takes place.
* Left: Mix a teaspoon full of slaked lime from the previous experiment, one teaspoon  full of sand. Add water to make a pulp of lime mortar.
* Middle: Make a stopper of an infusion bottle full of this lime mortar and keep it at the air for some days.
Observation:   A hard and brittle substance is formed.
* Right: After adding a drop of hydrochloric acid to the setted mortar gas bubbles can be seen.
This gas makes a drop of lime water (placed above it) milky.

Explanation:  Calcium hydroxide of the mortar reacted with the carbon dioxide of the air forming lime stone     Ca(OH)2 + CO2 --setting--> CaCO3 + H2O
The reaction of acid with the hardened product proves that the gas wais newly built carbon dioxide.
