In Mombasa at the coast of
the Indian Ocean a Kenia company mines a big quarry for cement production.
The place where the old quarry was abandoned 30 years ago is visited now
by groups of schoolchildren and tourists walking in the shade of Casuarina
trees to observe wildlife, farming crops of rice, of fish and of crocodiles.
* Left: Thousands
of Casuarina trees were planted into holes drilled into the rocks
3 months prior to the start of the wet season.
(Casuarina trees
can produce their own fertilizers using bacteria in their roots: It takes
less than 10 years to form a Casuarina forest.)
* Middle: Huge myriopods
feed on Casuarina needles discarded on the bottom ...
* .... producing fertile
soil (right). Grass can grow, animals can graze.
